During the first major rebuild, the Valkyrie’s front fend mounted Mustang mirrors were removed, replaced with the well known aftermarket Vitaloni brand Californian mirrors. These were adequate previously when I could also see through the back window with the inside mirror. But with the new fiberglass roof scoop making the interior rear view mirror useless, I really needed larger door mirrors for safe lane changes and to see if “the man” was stalking me.
After a couple of failed attempts at modifying the Vitaloni mirrors for a better view, I got the idea of adapting some kind of power mirrors that I could control from a typical mirror switch and be able to adjust them without having to leave my seat. My search led me to some import clones of C6 (2009) Corvette side mirrors that were electrically adjustable (but not power folding). They were quite a bit larger than what I thought would look right on my relatively small car, but in the interest of safety, I decided to give them a try.
To control them, I determined that a power mirror switch intended for a Chevy Silverado would work, if wired correctly. A quick trip to my local salvage yard netted me compatible connectors and extra pins.
I designed and 3D printed a nice mounting plate with a protective guard to prevent accidental pressing or damage to the switch, as getting in and out of this car sometimes involves flailing limbs and shoes.
I also 3D printed wedges out of TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), a flexible, rubber-like material that is quite durable. I think I may need to print slightly thicker ones as the mirrors don’t look to be perfectly level.
