This sub-project turned out to be a lot more work than I initially thought it would be. I thought I had found the perfect size poly fuel tank that fit perfectly between my front frame rails, and top of the tank would just miss hitting the body. The poly fuel tank I planned to use would be mounted between the front frame rails. The radiator would be moved to the rear. I proceeded with creating a support structure out of 1″ square steel tubing. I also modified the top of the poly tank to use the fill plate from the old Fuel Safe fuel cell that had been mounted in the rear. Everything appeared to be working out until I filled the tank with gasoline. That’s when I noticed the bottom of the poly tank was hitting the hose fittings on the power steering rack. Unfortunately, I couldn’t raise the tank at all because the top of the tank was contacting the body where the vent openings are. It appears the poly tank actually expanded just a bit after it was filled with fuel. Even after emptying the tank of fuel, I had a heck of a time lifting the tank up out of the frame. This was when I decided to replace the poly tank with a custom made unit that would have the proper clearance to avoid interfering with anything nearby. I spent a few days searching for a fabricator who could build a tank to my specifications, but this proved to be quite difficult. In the end, I decided to try building it myself. And since I didn’t have a TIG welder at the time, I planned to use relatively thick 16 gauge (.060″) sheet steel and weld it up with a MIG welder.
